Summer continues to fly.

I remember being in school and than teaching school that the only month I truly loved was June. Don't get me wrong. I love school once I'd get back in the groove and there is something to love about all the months, seasons, holidays etc. But June was the anticipation of the end, fun starting, looking forward to the whole summer ahead. From July 1st, I always felt summer ticking away. Now that we are preparing to homeschool, the clock is ticking again. But I will resolve to enjoy every moment of the summer. I look forward to being in the groove of school in a few months.

And we have had lots of fun moments. After returning from Myrtle Beach, our friends, Wendy and Gary Wheeler from Seattle brought their daughter 6 1/2 year old Katie to Maryland for a visit. The Wheelers were our mentors when we were dating/engaged, their older sons and daughter were in our wedding, and now they are our mentors in parenting, homeschooling, and projects (not sure which way it goes for Gary and Ken's projects though). We had a wonderful visit picking raspberries, going to River Valley Ranch for fireworks and music, dinner with old friends, Dutch Wonderland and just chatting outside enjoying the awesome weather this summer.
Fourth of July was spend with many families from church at our friends' homes (two families live next door to each other). We played corn hole, tossed water balloons, ATE, lite sparklers, and walked to the county fireworks. Rachael did better with the fireworks this year with no trembling but she still closes her eyes, holds her ears and seems to hiberate during the shows.

Last week, Grandmom came for a few days during which Ken and I went out for a really nice dinner (because I didn't make enough dinner for 6 people!) and made an illegal trip to the dump (not on the same day :)

Saturday, we had two parties to attend (a rarity for us!). And had a great time with lots of friends.

Yesterday, we went to early church, then off to the NCR trail for a bike ride with Ken's parents. We rode 12 miles round trip. Ryan managed to do 6 miles his first time on the trail. My father-in-law, an avid rider, stayed with him so the rest of us could continue on. Dinner at Red Robin was a great end to a fun family weekend.

Lots of fun moments but there has been a lot of screaming in our house lately. The kids are coming into their own and their 'owns' get on each other's nerves which in turn gets on our nerves. And Jack our precious baby has found his voice and joins in for the fun of it.

I have found myself taking fewer pictures this summer for several reasons.
  • remember the part about enjoying every moment (not trying to capture the perfect pic)
  • I have too many to scrap as it is
  • one less bag I have to carry
A very fun, very loud summer it is.

Sounds like fun! Luke starts swimming lessons tomorrow. I think I am more nervous than he is - old pit-of-the-stomach feeling remembering my own (horrible) lessons.

I've been meaning to go raspberry picking up at Larriland. Should've gone last week when it was still cool out - this week looks to be beastly. Have you done enough for the summer or would you like to meet us there next week when it is cooler?

Hi Booke -- thanks for your sweet comment on my homeschool post about our first day. So far (one day into it!) I have been very impressed with Sonlight. It's more expensive than some other companies, but for someone like me who has no prior experience as a teacher, it couldn't be easier. The instructor guides list what I should do every day, and they include all the fun supplemental things that make learning fun, but that I would never think of! Anyway, I'll continue to write about how it all goes on my blog. :)
